You’ve got to give 100% to get 100%! Life and art are intertwined. Lessons in your personal life can be applied to your art and artistic career. This is only my second blog entry and I feel like today’s entry is more of a journal entry. So if this seems too personal…sorry. I don’t think I can separate my art and my life. Art is my life. After getting my BFA at The Kansas City Art Institute, working ten years as an artist, then getting married and my MFA from Washington University St. Louis, I had two daughters. I continued working as an artist, but always dropped what I was working on to put the needs of my family first. I have absolutely not one bit of regret in doing so, and would do the exact same thing today. I have two fabulous, incredibly talented young adult daughters and could not be more proud of them! However, now it is my turn to come first!

This has been a big year of transition for me. After 24 years of marriage, I am now on my own. People keep telling me I need to “get a job”. I say that I have a job. It just pays me differently! Sometimes it’s fluid in cash. Other times it pays only in the happiness and satisfaction of doing what I love. I have always been an artist and always will be an artist. Just because I didn’t devote myself 100% to my career in the past doesn’t mean I can’t do that now. This is MY time. I am putting my career first now. If I don’t do it now, I won’t ever have a chance to accomplish all of my artistic goals.

Last week was a very good week! I participated in two different plein-air events, got best of show in one, won two awards in another. I had an opening for a solo show, firmed up a couple of portrait commissions and gained a couple of new students. I’d say that was a very good week!

So, if you want to get 100%, you have got to give 100%!
